I need to work with the 3d model of some places. Google Earth has the 3d building layer with 'Gray Buildings' in it. This would be exactly what I would require. Is there any way to get the 3d models that are used? Is there a Google Earth API (other than the Javascript stuff)? (I'm working in .net) that would help?

Make your geographic 3D data visible to the world on Google Maps and Google Earth. Has your organization developed a 3D model representing buildings in your city? By sharing your data with the Google Cities in 3D Program, you can have this data published to millions of viewers of Google Earth, Google Maps, and Google Maps for mobile worldwide.

We have a 3D model in Google Earth and it all appears to be in the right location. Next thing to do is turn on the 3D buildings and cloud effects. This is now looking great, though I think we can do just a little better. 3D Printing from Google Earth. There is currently no way to download models from within Google Earth. Also, even is there was - extracting data is against the TOS. Many of the models come from government or private sources so there are issues with licencing the data as a whole. It is worth noting however that a lot of the models in Google Earth are located on the Sketch up 3dwarehouse so maybe you could get that data you want from there?

Also, to work with the javascript api from managed code you might want to check this control library I have put together. Whilst the controls themselves may not be applicable, the ideas behind them should get you under way. http://code.google.com/p/winforms-geplugin-control-library/ essentially there are a series of wrappers and helpers that let you seamlessly integrate the plugin into a winforms application.

While there still isn't support for getting building geometry from Google's APIs, OpenStreetMaps does expose some data you can use. Check out this guide here:

Making a request like

Will return an XML with building's base outlines and (in some cases) heights. You can use this info to extrude some very simple buildings: http://i.imgur.com/ayNPB.png

To fill in the missing height values (and they're missing on most buildings), I try to use the area of the building's footprint to determine how tall it might be compared to nearby buildings. Unfortunately, until Google is able to make their models public, this will have to do.

Google Earth lets you do some pretty amazing stuff. You can record video diving into and flying over a city or neighborhood. You can also export satellite imagery and maps. While videos, aerial images, and maps are great for showing the spaces, cities, and specific locations of newsworthy events for two-dimensional stories, they aren’t great for 3D and virtual reality storytelling. Google Earth does have an extensive database of 3D models, but unfortunately there is no 3D export feature. I set out to find a work-around.

With this week’s Democratic National Convention in the news, I really wanted a 3D model of the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, where the Democratic Party is convening this week. Photogrammetry is an imaging process for making spatially accurate maps and and three-dimensional models of real-world objects, buildings and landscapes. Many photogrammetric reconstructions use aerial photography, so I thought I could use the same process inside Google Earth.

Photogrammetry in Google Earth works!

How did I do it?

1. Capture video of the 3D model in Google Earth Pro (free).

Download Google Earth Pro here.

2. Extract images from that video.

Use video editing software (I use Adobe Premiere Pro) or FFmpeg (free) to extract images from the video.

3. Process your images into a 3D replica of what you captured in Google Earth Pro.

You’ll need photogrammetric processing software that can build 3D models out of photos. For that I use Autodesk’s Memento (free, OSX). Windows users can use Autodesk’s Remake (free).

4. I made a video to guide you through it.

5. Don't forget the necessary attribution.

Much of the imagery in Google Earth was provided by third parties. So definitely look at the attribution requirements for Google Earth. Reach out to the Google News Lab if you work for a media organization and want to use alternate attributions.

6. Publish your 3D model.

If you publish your extracted 3D content on Sketchfab, which is like YouTube for 3D content, the easiest way to handle attribution is to place the text on an image or flat color background which you can add to your model after it’s been uploaded. That’s what I did for the above Wells Fargo Center 3D reconstruction. Sketchfab allows you to add annotations, and embed your 3D content into web pages and Facebook News Feeds.

7. You can also make a virtual reality environment from your exported 3D model.

I used Unity to create a walkable environment of the Wells Fargo Center. You can even virtually walk on the roof! If you have an HTC Vive you can download the VR environment so you can walk on the building yourself.
