It should also insure that 4K content that developers add at a later date is downloaded as soon as it becomes available.

You can also transfer your system settings so you don’t have to take time setting up the One X when it arrives. If you transfer the settings, your new One X will be configured more or less like your old Xbox One.

Connect an external drive to your current system. Go to Settings>System>Backup & transfer and tap Back up my settings. You can see a list of what will and won't be transferred by tapping What gets backed up? Tap Back up to device. If you want to make sure the transferred settings are identical to the settings in place when you make the switch to the One X, check the Keep backup current box.

Plug the external drive into the One X before you power it on. When the One X powers up you’ll be given the chance to load the settings from the hard drive.

If you have an external hard drive and you follow these instructions, all you have to do is plug the drive into the One X and download the system settings before you  start playing in 4K. No waiting for interminable downloads of games or 4K asset packs. Sweet.

It’s been apparent since at least the launch of its backwards compatibility program that Xbox is serious about providing features that benefit players. Their player-focused orientation continues with a set of features designed to make it easy to move from the Xbox One or One S to the Xbox One X. Here’s how to prepare for the move so that you can get up and playing as soon as possible after your One X is hooked up and powered on.

Transferring games

There are two ways to transfer games from your current Xbox One to the One X. They’re both easy, but transferring by way of an external hard drive is faster and all the downloading can be done before the One X arrives.

Transfer using an external drive. You’ll need an external drive that can connect to the Xbox One using USB 3.0 and can hold at least 256 GB. Plug the drive in and you’ll be prompted to format for either games and apps or personal data such as music, video or pictures. Format for games and apps. The external drive is now the default location for everything else you download or buy. You can change this if you want new stuff saved on your internal drive.

After the drive is formatted, go to Settings>System>Storage. Highlight your internal drive and tap Transfer. Your external drive should show up as the target drive. Select the games you want to transfer and tap either Move or Copy. That’s it. When the One X arrives, all you have to do is plug in the external drive and you’re good to go.

Transferring using network transfer. If you don’t have an external drive, you can transfer games through your wireless network. It’s slower and you have to wait until the One X is in place to begin transferring games.

To initiate network transfer, make sure both systems are logged into the same network. Go to Settings>System>Backup & transfer. Highlight Network transfer and check Allow network transfer.
